D'Wayne Wiggins

When: Fri., Nov. 7, 8 & 10 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 8, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

Two decades since launching the multi-platinum new jack swing group Tony! Toni! Toné!, brothers D'Wayne Wiggins and Raphael Saadiq are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. And, ironically, they're both reaching back in order to move forward. Saadiq's new Motown-inspired joint, The Way I See It,is probably the best R&B album of 2008, even though it sounds about forty years old. Wiggins' new single, "Be Thankful," is a homespun version of the famous William DeVaughn tune "Be Thankful for What You Got." Though gussied up with a cameo from Oakland rapper Too $hort and some updated pop culture references ("plasma TVs" instead of "TV antennae in the back"), it's still vintage soul. Wiggins performs at Oakland Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero) on Nov. 7 and 8. 8 & 10 p.m., $25.
