Rated PG-13 107 minutes 2017

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises) departs from his usual sci-fi to tell the story of the World War II evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940, when more than 300,000 surrounded British and Allied troops were rescued off a beach in the title French seacoast town and brought safely to England by a flotilla of small craft, under heavy enemy fire. Nolan’s daring approach to history uses three separate threads – focusing on an army private (Fionn Whitehead), a civilian boat skipper (Mark Rylance), and an RAF Spitfire pilot (Tom Hardy) – to show this crucial event from a personal angle, with no narration and scant dialogue. Superb performances all around, thrilling action sequences, and an immediacy few war movies have ever captured. Written and directed by Nolan, and costarring Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Aneurin Barnard, Barry Keoghan, James D’Arcy, and Harry Styles. Highly recommended (106 min., 2017, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
