Spoken Word

Drunken Poetry Slam

When: Wed., March 12, 8:30 p.m. 2008

Legend has it that spoken word started as a bar game that ranked just a little higher than darts (and a little lower than beer bungee) on the cerebral scale. On Wednesday, March 12, EastBay poets celebrate that legacy with a night of poems about inebriation, appropriately dubbed the Drunken Poetry Slam. Each contestant will bring two original poems or scintillating anecdotes to compete for a $150 cash prize, bestowed on the top three poets. The idea is to sound compelling enough to overcome the clatter of beer glasses and the clamor of barroom hecklers. Sounds like a tall order, and one that may require a little social lubricant. Featuring LA poet Ratpack Slim and hosted by Xtian Drake, the Drunken Poetry Slam takes place at the Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 8:30 p.m., $7. Daniland.com/slam
