Drive

Rated R 100 minutes 2011

Neither Ryan Gosling’s ultra-cool attitude nor Nicolas Winding Refn’s arty-action direction runs out of gas in the tale of a movie stuntman (Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway wheel man, and the rotten people he hangs around with in LA. Danish move-over Refn, who made the astounding Bronson, picks through the film-noirish mayhem with an expert eye, helped by the vivid character playing of Carey Mulligan (the Driver’s lady friend), Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman (gangsters), and Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks as an unlucky accomplice. Realistically, nothing adds up, but the narrative’s inner dram logic is powerful enough to propel us across the finish line. As a bonus, the driving stunts appear to use the bare minimum of computer graphics. Screenplay by Hossein Amini, from the novel by James Sallis. (100 min.)
