Itâs debatable if Drillbit Taylor -â the story of three high-school dweebs who hire a homeless ex-Army Ranger (sort of) to protect them from bullies -â had a premise worth making a sophomoric PG-13 comedy out of in the first place. But with the addition of Judd Apatow as producer, Seth Rogen as co-screenwriter, and funnyman Owen Wilson as Drillbit, one would assume the synoptic shortcomings would be made up for with original set pieces, one-liners, and a whole lotta heart. Well, the assumption would be wrong, as Drillbit Taylor is a conglomeration of bad ideas and incongruous story elements that shouldâve been lost twenty years ago when John Hughes first wrote the treatment. What will Apatow not slap his name onto for a buck these days? (102 min.).
