Down the Congo Line II

As artistic director of Oakland's Dimensions Dance Theater for the past 39 years, Deborah Vaughan has pushed the boundaries of African Dance through collaborations with artists from Chanticleer to Hugh Masekela. Cuban-born Jose Rojas and Congolese-born HerveMakaya are her co-creators for Dimensions' new show, Down the Congo Line II, a celebration of dance, drumming, and culture premiering on Saturday, Oct. 13, at MalongaCasquelourd Center for the Arts (1428 Alice St., Oakland). Rojas' Of the Island highlights Cuba's deep connection to the Congo through dance and music, while Makaya'sVukana combines the ngoma drum, songs, storytelling, and dance styles that originated in Brazzaville, Congo. Two of the Bay Area's best-known drummers, Cuban-born Sandy Perez and local artist KiaziMalonga (son of the late MalongaCasquelourd), join Cuban and Congolese percussionists to lay down the rhythms. 8 p.m., $15-$25. 510-465-3363 or
