Double Bass

When: Fri., July 22, 9 p.m. 2011

Not only do the DJs at this weekend's Double Bass event have exotic names (Dulce Vita, Dubster Spook, Elz, The Doctor), they play a fascinating selection of music, to boot. Vita, who apparently made her debut at Google headquarters, specializes in chunky break-beats, heavily processed vocal samples, and computer-generated effects. She's often described as "aggressive," probably because she likes to start each mix on a crescendo. Elz is more melodic and groove-oriented, while The Doctor is fond of overlapping drum patterns, which give his tracks a more world-ish flair. True to its title, the party was designed to fill two rooms with wall-to-wall sound, one dedicated to house and electro, the other to dubstep and drum 'n' bass. Evidently, the event organizers' idea was not only to maximize their potential audience, but also to encourage people from different scenes to mix together - even if it's only by happenstance. One can imagine the restroom line at Double Bass will be, well, interesting. At Club Six (60 Sixth St., San Francisco) Friday, July 22. 9 p.m., $5.
