Donald Harrison Workshop

When: Sun., Jan. 20, 11:45 a.m. 2008

It's not often that a fledgling saxophonist gets to learn circular breathing or altissimo from a real jazz standard-bearer. But that once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity will happen in a special workshop with former Jazz Messengers sideman Donald Harrison. Famous for his early collaborations with trumpeter Terence Blanchard, and for anointing himself the grand titan of "nouveau swing" (a smooth jazz mélange of second-line, R&B, and old-school swing music) during a drawn-out electric phase, Harrison remains one of the most influential players of the post-bop era. The workshop takes place at the Jazzschool (2087 Addison St., Berkeley) this Sunday, Jan. 20, from 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m., and costs $30 for Jazzschool members, $45 for everyone else. Jazzschool.com
