Doin' it in the Park

When: Sun., Sept. 4, 12-6 p.m. 2011

Ostensibly a way for urban hip-hop to acknowledge the different cultures and ethnicities that comprise its fanbase, "Doin' It in the Park" might actually help mend an even deeper rift in the scene -- the one that separates commercial radio DJs from their backpacker counterparts. This year's edition will feature Triple Threat wax slingers Shortkut and Apollo, alongside Platurn of Oakland Faders and KMEL's Chuy Gomez. Also on the bill: J. Boogie of the somewhat nebulous local group Dubtronic Science, dancehall turntablistsIvier and Mpenzi, Mr. E, Boogie Brown, and self-taught musicologist Erik Santero. Remarkably well-rounded, this event will feature just about every type of DJ that exists in the Bay Area, from morning-show personalities to underground stalwarts, artists featured on NPR, and people who insist on spinning vinyl exclusively. Barbecue provided -- it's their way of "giving back." At Marx Meadow (Golden GatePark, San Francisco) on Sunday, Sept. 4.Noon-6 p.m., free. For info, e-mail
