Dobet Gnahoré

When: Thu., July 17, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

DobetGnahoré, a singer, songwriter, and percussionist from the Ivory Coast now based in Paris, plays a bright, irresistible brand of pan-African pop that has made her a favorite with world music audiences all over the globe. With her musical partner, French guitarist Colin Laroche, and her band, Gnahoré creates a highly charged, rhythmically driven sound that incorporates sounds from South Africa, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Benin, and Congo with European, Caribbean, and American music. She grew up in the Ki-Yi Mbock community, a collective of interdisciplinary artists founded by her father BoniGnahoré, who plays percussion in her band. Gnahoré's supple, effortless alto makes her music take flight with its soulful expressiveness, while her band, under the direction of her husband, keeps the music anchored to the earth with a deep, sumptuous groove. DobetGnahoré plays Thursday, July 17th at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland). 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., $20. Yoshis.com
