DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock: The Battle

When: Fri., Sept. 30, 9 p.m. 2011

Seldom do we get to use the term "epic" when describing a DJ battle, which, unlike anything involving swords, boxing gloves, or even rhyming insults, isn't exactly a form of blood sport. Unless, of course, the people involved are so high-caliber that your nerves really would jangle just watching them fade one record into the next. Enter DJ Premier, of the now-defunct Brooklyn hip-hop act Gang Starr, and Pete Rock, who produced just about every elevator-jazz hip-hop hit of the Nineties. Both in their forties, they've risen from icon status to veritable sainthood -- to borrow a boxing metaphor, they're the Manny Pacquiao and Floyd "Money" Mayweather of record-spinning. And the two will face off, gladiatorial-style, in San Francisco this week. Only slightly less exciting than a boxing match, a DJ battle of this sort will require the two contestants to improvise on separate turntables, trying to best each other in terms of creativity, dexterity, and rhythm. In this case, it'll surely be epic. Fran Boogie hosts; DJ Shortkut opens. At Mighty (119 Utah St., San Francisco) on Friday, Sept. 30. 9 p.m., $30-$40.
