DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown

When: Fri., Aug. 12, 9 p.m. 2011

There's a new surprise with every hairpin turn of Erykah Badu's career, from her foray into acting, to her nude cameo in the video "Window Seat" (which earned her a disorderly conduct citation), to her vegan diet, to her romantic liaisons (with Andre 3000, Common, The D.O.C., and Jay Electronica). The singer cut her teeth freestyling alongside Roy Hargrove, got her major star turn with The Roots, and currently holds court as the nominal Queen of Neo Soul. Her latest enterprise is turntablism, under the DJ moniker Lo Down Loretta Brown. She'll grace San Francisco in that guise this week, to celebrate the seventh anniversary of local promotions company Ankh Marketing. No doubt Badu will spin an interesting set, given that her widely disparate tastes and adventurous sensibility. The EastBay's own DJ D-Sharp will open. At Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) on Friday, Aug. 12. 9 p.m., $25.
