DJ Assault and DJ Spinn

When: Sat., July 14, 10 p.m. 2012

DJ battles are always more promising when the performers involved have names that do, indeed, make them sound ready for gladiatorial combat: It doesn't get much better than "DJ Assault." But the Detroit-raised waxslinger actually has a slew of other monikers that shift with his mood, or his intentions. At grittier moments, he'll go by "Craig Diamonds, the Street Narrator"; when he's feeling more like a libertine, he'll proclaim himself "The King of Booty." But really, it's hard to figure out why Assault ever wanted a stage handle in the first place, given that his real name, Craig De Sean Adams, rolls so luxuriantly off the tongue. This week, he'll pit himself against Chicago-raised B-boy DJ Spinn, who cut his teeth spinning records at roller rinks, but ultimately became a titan in a city known for hip-hop and house music. In fact, both say they're indebted to the environments in which they grew up: Assault came to dance music via Motown, while Spinn launched his career as a B-boy in the famous Chicago crew House-O-Matics. They'll face off at Icon Ultra Lounge (1192 Folsom St., San Francisco) on Saturday, July 14. 10 p.m., $10.
