Sci-fi? In South Africa? A gigantic mother ship from outer space anchors in the air above Johannesburg for twenty years, during which time the powerful, seven-foot, shrimp-faced aliens, aka prawns, come down to earth and inhabit Soweto. Dont worry director and co-screenwriter (with Terri Tatchell) Neill Blomkamp doesnt belabor the race-relations allegorical booshwah unnecessarily. Hes more concerned with the rebellious creatures, who trade weapons with gangsters and make life interesting for Wikus van de Merwe (well played by actor Sharlto Copley), a corporate bureaucrat assigned to evict the prawns from the shanty township. Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson reportedly sent the film out as a viral video to drum up publicity, but it stands alone just fine on its action sequences and the comic timing of Copley (112 min.).
