A populist rebellion 120 years ago during the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899 looks a lot like rebellion throughout history. But at Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park, street violence transforms into brilliant songs, bristling dance and lovable rebel characters. Presented in the glorious, outdoor atmosphere the result is a magical night of theater. The award-winning stage musical based on the 1992 film and book by Harvey Fierstein features a score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman. As young newsies push back at newspaper magnates’ unfair labor practices and suffer flagrant social inequities, the climate onstage is hot. Bring blankets to fight chill winds off the Pacific and heat up for populist protest.
