Book groups are kind of like exercise, or quitting smoking, or pretty much anything we do for self-betterment: A great idea in theory, but difficult to keep up in practice. Enter the One Night Stand series at Diesel (5433 College Ave., Oakland), which offers all the camaraderie and smart discussion of any book group, minus the commitment to actually read a book every month. This iteration will cover local author Rebecca Solnit’s lyrical, thought-provoking, downright gorgeous new work of literary nonfiction, The Faraway Nearby, and will be led by Diesel’s own Linda Grana. Like that other kind of one-night stand, it promises an evening of no-strings-attached fun, except in this case you get whatever the opposite of next-day self-loathing is.
