David Satori’s Oakland group Beats Antique has developed a notable following for its unusual blend of electronic sounds and world-beat influences. Not quite as well-known but equally interesting is Satori’s other band, Dirtwire. This trio — which also includes Evan Fraser of Hamsa Lila and Mark Reveley of Jed and Lucia — tackles organic instruments and electronic production from a different angle. They semi-jokingly refer to it as “swamptronica,” but the label gives a real sense of their ability to capture American roots music and electronic dance music in the same breath. Fraser owns hundreds of instruments in his collection, including many small handheld ones that most folks wouldn’t even recognize. He makes use of most of these in Dirtwire. The group’s latest album, Blaze, captures the sounds of the Old West, filtered through a sci-fi steampunk lens.
