Die Antwoord

When: Fri., Nov. 9, 7 p.m. 2012

The image put forth by Die Antwoord in its viral videos "Zef Side" and "Enter the Ninja" makes it tempting to write off the South African duo as a gimmick. After all, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er were active in satirical art collectives before they began making rap-rave music that reps Cape Town's "zef" movement, an expression of working-class South African life. Like most pop phenomenons, Die Antwoord blurs the line between what's authentic and what's for show, but what's certain is that it will deliver a memorable live show. Joined by DJ Hi-Tek, who will drop the industrial beats that make the music danceable, Yo-Landi will run around stage like a rabid squirrel while Ninja raps crass lyrics about drugs and sex. In a touring version of Barcelona's long-running Sonar Festival, the show will also feature a rare appearance from house DJ Seth Troxler, plus Azari & III, Paul Kalkbrenner, and Nic Fanciulli at The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Friday, Nov. 9. 7 p.m., $39.50, $49.50.
