Filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow brings the same socially conscious investigative enterprise to the fiery real-life Detroit riots of 1967 that she demonstrated in The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Through the eyes of a group of people caught up the “police riot” in the title city’s largest Black neighborhood, we witness a shockingly violent abuse of power when a trio of racist cops essentially takes the inhabitants of a motel hostage, looking for a “sniper.” Captivating performances by actors John Boyega, Will Poulter, Anthony Mackie, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Hannah Murray, and Kaitlyn Dever. The screenplay, a dramatization of the notorious Algiers Motel incident, is by writer and frequent Bigelow collaborator Mark Boal. An urban history lesson that has a lot to teach us, fifty years after the fact (143 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
