When: June 19-July 19 2015
The Pulitzer-Prize nominated play Detroit made its Bay Area debut at Aurora Theatre (2081 Addison St., Berkeley) in June, and was recently extended through July 26. Penned by Lisa D’Amour and directed by Josh Costello, this dark comedy follows Ben (Jeff Garrett) and Mary (Amy Resnick), a couple on the verge of losing everything after Ben’s layoff, and their new neighbors, Sharon (Luisa Frasconi) and Kenny (Patrick Kelly Jones), who have already lost everything after repeated bouts with addiction. The two disparate couples forge an unlikely friendship, bonding over cookouts and backyard barbecues. But as they get to know more about each other, it becomes increasingly clear that one of the couples has been less than honest with the other. What follows is a poignant and probing look at depression after financial collapse. The small cast of four is superb, while the commentary on the decline of neighborly camaraderie is elegantly delivered in Costello’s version of this acclaimed play.
