Rated R 90 minutes 2016

A party of undocumented immigrants sneaks across the US-Mexico border and immediately comes under assault from a self-appointed “border security” vigilante and his attack-trained dog. What follows is a satisfyingly tense outdoor adventure in which the hunted — led by actor Gael García Bernal as an ordinary Mexican laborer crossing for the second time — try to evade the hunter (actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in the unforgiving desert. It’s a polished, violent, strikingly spare debut feature for filmmaker Jonás Cuarón, son of superstar director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity), with politics as straightforward as its screenplay, written by the younger Cuarón with Mateo García. A cruel postcard from the America we’d probably rather not think about — but should (88 min.).
