Democratic State Leaders Propose to Tax the Rich

Democratic lawmakers released their new budget plan yesterday, a proposal for $10 billion in new taxes, mostly geared toward the wealthy. The Trib reports that unlike in previous years, when Californians were particularly tax-phobic, the public mood may be a little friendlier toward taxes. Cuts in government services and the threat of closing down parks, as well as a rising class disparity, may account for the new openness toward higher taxes. Still, we'll believe it when we see it.
