State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg followed through on his promise to file suit against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, alleging that the governor's last-minute budget cuts were illegal, according to the Chron. Schwarzenegger used his line-item veto powers to slash an additional $489 million from the state budget. The eleventh-hour cuts were made mostly to social and health programs for the poor, but they also could force the closure of up to 100 state parks. The nonpartisan Legislative Counsel's office also concluded last week that Schwarzenegger's actions broke the law. The governor, however, has maintained he did nothing wrong.
