Steve Buscemi is in classic form as a frantic New York City paparazzo, getting more and more burnt-out by the fast-paced, vacuous scene, who takes in a homeless apprentice (Michael Pitt). When the apprentice upstages his mentor by becoming the boyfriend of the moment of a pop star of the moment (Alison Lohman), all writer-director Tom DiCillo has to do for laughs is to let it simmer. That's practically all that happens, but with role players like Kevin Corrigan and Elvis Costello along for the ride, we know we're in good hands. Buscemi didn't get to be king of the Lower Manhattan hipsters for nothing. Watch him work (102 min., 2006).
