Erik Greenberg Anjou’s love letter to the Jewish deli could make anyone hungry. With third-generation deli man Ziggy Gruber as his guide, producer-director Ankou not only revisits the glory days of the now rare neighborhood deli with a tableful of alter kockers – Larry King, Jerry Stiller, Fyvush Finkel, Alan Dershowitz, et al. – but makes a case that America needs its pastrami, smoked whitefish, bialys, kreplach, and coconut macaroons like it needs fresh air. Amazingly, Anjou’s doc asserts that there are only 150 kosher delis left in all of North America. Can this be true? Makes us want to go out and binge on chopped chicken liver before it’s too late. A winner all the way (91 min.).
