Okay, this is a little freaky. Charles De Lauer, the man who ran downtown Oakland’s DeLauer’s newsstand for decades, has died just a month after selling the store to new managers. The city of Oakland was shocked and dismayed when DeLauer announced he would have to close the store, and breathed a sigh of relief when friends and downtown boosters managed to find someone to take over operation of the venerable newsstand. Now, his final bit of business complete, Charles DeLauer has left the building.
