Del Tha Funky Homosapien

Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Bukue One, Serendipity Project and Hopie Spitshard

When: Wed., Nov. 25, 9 p.m. 2009

The last few years marked a spotty period for Del tha Funkee Homosapien. After the success of Deltron 3030 and “Clint Eastwood” — his hit single with the Gorillaz — Del found himself battling Legionnaires’ disease, bad-breakup drama, writer’s block, and a rather tepid Def Jux debut. But this year he made a surprising come back with Parallel Uni-verses, a thoroughly excellent collaboration with Jersey rapper Tame One. The album blends fully orchestrated beats with arcane slang words and well-written rap narratives. In an autobiographical track called “Before This,” Del brags, offhandedly, about being placed in the Gifted and Talented program at his elementary school (he derides it, for reasons unexplained). Obviously a gifted thinker and writer, he might have found success in academia — had he not parlayed those skills into hip-hop. Del tha Funkee Homosapien performs on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at the Great American Music Hall (859 O’Farrell St., San Francisco) with Bukue One, Serendipity Project, and Hopie Spitshard. 9 p.m., $19-$22.
