Deep Blue Organ Trio

When: Sat., Feb. 4, 10:30 p.m. 2012

Blues, soul, bop, and beyond converge in the swinging sounds of Chicago's Deep Blue Organ Trio. Former Sonny Rollins guitarist Bobby Broom, Hammond B-3 burner Chris Foreman, and drummer Dave Rockingham comprise the combo, which has emerged over the past decade as the world's foremost exponent of the jazz organ trio tradition. On their current CD, Wonderful!, the three musicians deliver imaginative instrument treatments of  tunes from the Stevie Wonder songbook. While talking some liberties with the material, they retain many of the nuances of Wonder's originals, such as using the repeated three-note riff the Jackson 5 sang on "You Haven't Done Nothin,'" and borrowing licks played by Herbie Hancock on "As."  The group makes its Bay Area debut at Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Feb. 4. 10:30 p.m. $22, Yoshis.com
