Kevin Bacon stars as a milquetoast executive enjoying a comfortable life in the suburbs until his son is brutally murdered at a gas station during a gang initiation ritual. Directed by James Wan (Saw), this graphically violent film suffers from cursorily developed characters whose primary function is to advance the creaky plot. Ian Jeffers' sophomoric script contains some unintentional howlers -- the gang of street thugs Bacon's character faces down could only exist in the febrile imagination of a Hollywood writer or director. Their relentless viciousness conveniently lends Bacon's retribution the appropriate gravitas and moral imperative once the carnage commences. With Kelly Preston (wasted in a good performance as Bacon's wife), John Goodman, and Garrett Hedlund. R, 98 min.
