Finally, something good came out of the summer’s Edgerlygate fiasco. Yesterday, reports the Oakland Tribune, the Oakland City Council voted unanimously to pass Ignacio De la Fuente’s anti-nepotism law. The new rule forces applicants to city jobs to divulge if they live with or are related to any city employee. In addition, applicants will have to divulge if they’re boinking any city supervisors. Councilwoman Jane Brunner had opposed the ordinance in the past, but didn’t show up to vote. Nancy Nadel also criticized the ordinance, but went along with it in the end. Of course, the law is designed to end what many suspect is a regime of cronyism and self-dealing at City Hall, and rehabilitate Oakland’s reputation after Deborah Edgerly’s disastrous denouement.
