Rock & Pop

When: Fri., Jan. 18, 8 p.m. 2019

Southern California folk band Dawes, composed of guitarist/singer Taylor Goldsmith, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, bassist Wylie Gelber, and keyboardist Lee Pardini, has managed to remain nationally relevant despite not pursuing stardom. As the band embarks on a new tour to promote its sixth studio album, Passwords, the guys are letting Goldsmith’s songwriting and the band’s American folk-rock sound attract new fans. Unlike previous albums, Passwords dives into the subject of love and happily ever-afters — all thanks to Goldsmith’s recent marriage to actress and singer Mandy Moore. The album also talks about the modern world we are living in, and how we are navigating divisive politics and personal relationships intertwined in the inescapable era of social media. Dawes will kick off its tour in Oakland at the Fox Theater. Friday, Jan. 18, 7 p.m., $36, 1807 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland,
