For most people, David Cross is known as Tobias Fünke from Arrested Development. You know, he’s the unemployed “never nude” wannabe actor who tries to join the Blue Man Group — that guy. But before rocking tiny jean cut offs on television, he was popular for Mr. Show, the late 1990s HBO sketch comedy series that he starred in with fellow comedian Bob Odenkirk. The two played semi-fictionalized versions of themselves in skits that skewered everything from cock rings to the Ku Klux Klan. But even before that, starting at age seventeen, Cross has been doing stand up comedy — and he still has jokes to tell. His current tour is called “Making America Great Again!!” and it takes on the irrational, hate-fueled motivations that pervade American culture, hence the titular Trump reference. He’ll be at the Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, May 12 at 8 p.m. to comedically preach to the choir.
