Darol Anger's Monster String Quartet

When: Fri., July 3, 8 p.m. 2009

Longtime local favorites who rarely play together these days, violinist Darol Anger and mandolinistMike Marshall team up on Thursday at the Freight and Salvage. The pair came to prominence in the original David Grisman Quintet of the late '70s, breaking new ground in the now overpopulated but then new land between bluegrass and jazz instrumentals, for which Anger coined the term "new acoustic music." Toss in some J.S. Bach, a bit of rock, and anything else that acts as a springboard to duo improvisation, and you've got an inspired evening. In this concert they are joined by young siblings Tashina (violin) and Tristan (cello) Clarridge, already favorites of the Freight's open mic nights. Thursday, Dec.13, 8 p.m., $22.50, $23.50. 510-548-1761 or

Larry Kelp

Price: $18.50-$19.50
