Darkest Hour

Rated PG-13 125 minutes 2017

Sturdy historical dramatization of the early days of World War II in Britain is lifted into a higher category by actor Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who stood up to Hitler when it really counted. As director Joe Wright (Atonement) and screenwriter Anthony McCatrten (The Theory of Everything) see it, Churchill’s natural hawkishness is bolstered when he takes a ride on a London underground train during rush hour and talks to the people – that potentially maudlin dramatic device in the last reel cleanses the film of its doldrums like a splash of Winnie’s favorite cognac. Fine character playing by Kristin Scott Thomas (as Clementine Churchill), Ben Mendelsohn (King George VI), and Stephen Dillane (Viscount Hailifax) also helps out. But it’s Oldman’s transformation, complete with paunch and cigar, that seals the deal (125 min., 2017, rated PG-13)
