Dance of the Holy Ghosts

When: March 16-31 2018

Ubuntu Theater Project has twice presented workshop versions (in 2014 and 2015) of Marcus Gardley’s Dance of the Holy Ghosts, after its original premier at Yale Rep in 2006. And now executive and artistic director Michael Moran is bringing it back for a third iteration. This time, the poetic, modern myth-packed story by West Oakland native Gardley is told primarily by a gospel choir and central character, Marcus. Although not strictly autobiographical, the play echoes Gardley’s life in Oakland as the young man tells the story of Oscar, a grandfather whose absence overshadowed his sporadic presence. Told in the abandoned-church-turned-community-center known as the Oakland Peace Center, Holy Ghosts has, at its core, a radical compassion similar to the spirit driving Ubuntu’s mission. “This play never gets old,” said Moran. “Its epic-yet-personal nature continuously keeps me engaged, just like we are always engaged in how to forgive and accept those we love most.”
