Dance at Large

When: Nov. 7-8, 8 p.m. 2008

Fat-positive dance choreographer Jessica Judd is well-attuned to -- but never galled by -- the body politics of classical Western dance. She's seen all the fashionably anorexic girls who dominate reality TV dance shows, and knows that, for all Sir Mix-a-Lot's protestations, the rap video world isn't any more progressive. But mainstream flesh phobias haven't stopped Judd from coming up with new dance routines that accommodate larger bodies. As director of Big Moves Bay Area and co-founder of the PhatFlyGirls-WestCoast, Judd has staged a variety of dance performances that combine jazz, hip-hop, burlesque, Bollywood, and musical theater elements. Her "look" is a little to the left of most repertory companies, but it's definitely fly. Big Moves presents Dance at Large on Nov. 7 and 8 at Laney College Theater (900 Fallon St., Oakland), with the Phat Fly Girls, Raks Africa, NaachDuniya, Goddess Force, Rubenesque Burlesque, and Culture Shock Oakland. 8 p.m., $8-$10.
