Dan Bern w/ Common Rotation

When: Thu., March 31, 8 p.m. 2011

Dan Bern's facility with language recalls the wise guys of the Sixties folk wave, as well as literary icons like John Fante and Raymond Chandler. While his melodies echo the sardonic pop of Elvis Costello and the British new wave, it's Bern's surrealistic sense of humor and compassionate take on life that makes him a force to be reckoned with. He's incredibly prolific, with songs that veer from profane to spiritual, from hilarious to deeply moving. He'll be showing off his rockin' side this week with the help of his frequent collaborator, the power pop trio Common Rotation. At Freight and Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley) on Thursday, Mar. 31. 9 p.m., $24, $26. TheFreight.org
