Dam Funk

When: Thu., July 1, 9 p.m. 2010

The July 4th holiday weekend usually means a dip in DJing, as many city dwellers typically decamp to the burbs, the woods, or other cities for their summer vacations. If you're not getting all funky up in Yosemite this weekend, then we highly recommend getting funky with Dam Funk in the Bay. Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk,'' Dam Funk (pronounced with a hard 'A,' like "Dame") is an early 80s boogie, modern soul and electro-funk specialist. Slave, Aurra, early Prince, and Prelude Records mingle with super obscure funk gems during his set, which will feature a live component courtesy of backing band Master Blaster and special collaborator Nite Jewel. Plus DJ sets by TLR (Crème Organization), Not Happy Jan (M-Division) and Pickpocket (Donuts). At the Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco), Thursday, July 1, 9 p.m. $15. MezzanineSF.com
