DJ & Dance

Dam-Funk & Master Blazter

When: Sat., Nov. 5, 9 p.m. 2011

Lest you doubt that hip-hop has become, in large part, a nostalgia-based medium, look no further than Los Angeles "ambassador of the boogie funk" Dam-Funk ("DâM-FunK" for the typographically inclined). A well-versed expert in West Coast soul and electro-funk styles, avid gear collector, and owner of rare vintage synths, he launched his career doing Monday night "Funkmosphere" parties, built up fame as a DJ, and ultimately became a living, breathing homage to a very specific slice of Eighties pop culture. Now signed to Stones Throw Records, he leads a funk band that plays mostly original compositions on retro gear (old-school Rolands, drum machines, etc.). It's nothing if not addictive. Dam-Funk & Master Blazter will perform alongside Matthew David, Devin Who, and the Sweater Funk DJs at Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Nov. 5. 9 p.m., $20.
