The Baghead boys, writing-directing brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, try their hands at a larger-budget, comparatively grown-up relationship drama. And it flops. Homely middle-aged guy John C. Reilly finally finds a woman he can relate to -- single mother Marisa Tomei – but her jealous, possessive twentysomething son (Judd Apatow fat guy Jonah Hill) objects to the pairing, and the passive-aggressiveness gradually turns less passive. Duplass Bros. fans evidently idolize their writing and characterization, but all this “romantic comedy” can do is to veer awkwardly from potential horror story to warm and fuzzy romantic comedy like it can’t make up its mind. And an able cast -- Reilly, Tomei, Catherine Keener, Matt Walsh – goes to waste (92 min.).
