Cut Chemist

When: Thu., Aug. 18, 9 p.m. 2011

You could almost think of Cut Chemist as one of those child prodigies who spends his formative years building ham radios, or winning spelling bees, or practicing Rachmaninoff concertos. The only difference is that he started off as a waxslinger. Chemist, whose real name is Lucas MacFadden, supposedly began spinning records at age eleven, and launched his career in earnest with the Los Angeles hip-hop groups Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. Later he established himself as a solo act. While Chemist is perhaps most strongly associated with the hip-hop world, he's also known for commanding a wide variety of genres. His 2006 LP, The Audience Is Listening, features raps over worldish dance beats (cowbell, guitar, berimbau, bossa nova rhythms). He's sure to impress, spinning alongside rappers Edan and Mr. Lif. DJ Centipede opens. At Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Aug. 18. 9 p.m., $20.
