In a 2009 speech, Pope Benedict XVI reminded artists that they are the custodians of beauty in the world. Choreographer Pavel Zuštiak was paying attention. As this thought marinated in his head, he became inspired to create his richly, emotive dance production Custodians of Beauty. The production, which is put on by the New York-based Palissimo Company, makes its Bay Area debut via Cal Performances. It’s a production that feels both pure in its simplicity and rich in its multisensory nature, using the body, movement, light, and sound to analyze the essence of beauty. What is it? Where can we find it in today’s complex world? Zuštiak takes these elements and the human body itself as his paintbrush to express emotion and beauty.
