CubaCaribe Dance Festival

When: Fri., April 26, 8 p.m., Sat., April 27, 8 p.m. and Sun., April 28, 2 & 7 p.m. 2013

The 9th Annual CubaCaribe Dance Festival is saving the best for last, bringing artistic director Ramon Ramos Alayo's Danza del Caribe to the East Bay to wrap up the three-week Caribbean dance/music bash at the Laney College Theater (900 Fallon St., Oakland) on Friday through Sunday, Apr. 26-28 (the first two weekends were held in San Francisco). It's the AfroCuban company's first jaunt to the US, and as ambassadors of a cultural diaspora, they deliver high-energy, soul-celebrating virtuosity. Dedicated to the late Eduardo Rivero, who led Danza del Caribe to its position as a rich, historical repository of Afro-Caribbean dance and a harbinger of upcoming talent, the program -- titled Lessons Learned -- includes a re-staging of Alayo's 2004 work A Piece of White Cloth as well as two premieres. Fri.-Sat. 8 p.m., Sun. 2 and 7 p.m.; $20 online, $25 door, $12 for youth under age twelve.
