Crowded House

When: Mon., Aug. 23, 8 p.m. 2010

Comebacks are always a dicey maneuver, particularly from a ten-year hiatus. But Crowded House did it in a triumphant fashion when the band reconvened for 2006's most excellent Time on Earth. It was all the more impressive given that the New Zealand outfit was doing it in the wake of drummer Paul Hester's 2005 suicide. To be sure, the songs were unsurprisingly somber, but still the kind of solid fare you'd expect from frontman Neil Finn, a tunesmith whose output has been consistently topnotch both in and out of Crowded House. Intriguer is the band's second album since regrouping, and whilethe mood still carries a touch of melancholy, there are still plenty of inspirational moments. Highlights range from the Coldplay-flavored grandiosity of "Saturday Sun" and fuzz-guitar-pumped singalong "Inside Out", to the atmospheric "Isolation" and equally airy "Either Side of the World." Finn and his Kiwi compatriots will weavetheir special brand of well-crafted pop onMonday, August 23 at The Warfield (982 Market St., San Francisco), 8 p.m. $42-$62.50. TheWarfieldTheatre.com
