Crooked Still

When: Thu., Dec. 18, 8 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 21, 8 p.m. 2009

Crooked Still plays old-time music with a contemporary slant, coupling the five-finger banjo style of Gregory Liszt with Tristan Clarridge's driving cello, Brittany Haas's forceful fiddling, Corey DiMario's jazzy bass and the timeless singing of Aoife O'Donovan. Still Crooked, the band's latest effort, showcases nine obscure traditional tunes with some strong originals from the band. New members Clarridge and Haas have pushed the band in new directions, but their dedication to old-time music remains undiminished. They're one of the hottest young bands on the old-time music scene, using inventive cello arrangements to rewrite the old time/newgrass playbook. Crooked Still play Wednesday June 11 at the Freight and Salvage. 8:00 p.m. $18.50 advance, 19.50 door. TheFreight.org
