After over six years in the works, restaurant partners and childhood friends Greg Poulios and Mark Louie finally opened Creekwood Restaurant in November 2018 at the site of a former bike shop in South Berkeley. The shabby bike shop has been transformed into a restaurant that’s warm, inviting, and modern, complete with an open kitchen and pizza oven. Creekwood bills itself as California-Italian, so you’ll find some straightforward dishes like meatballs in marinara sauce with garlic bread, as well as some more inventive dishes like an appetizer of grilled Monterey Bay squid with mustard greens, crisp fingerling potatoes, and toasted olive aioli. You’ll find Neapolitan-style pizzas, too, like a crispy speck pizza with Gaeta olives, artichokes, and Pecorino cheese. Most pastas are made fresh in-house. Entreés like the lamb shank with turnips, turnip greens, cheesy polenta, and green salsa are well-composed. For dessert, try the straightforward yet satisfying carrot cake, served with toasted almond gelato from Almare.
