Cowboys and Aliens

Rated NR 2011

It might have been a good idea at first to add reptilian, gold-seeking, extra-terrestrial invaders to the story of a lone amnesiac cowpoke (Daniel Craig) riding into an Old West frontier town looking for trouble – as a straight-up western, it’s going nowhere. But instead of the aliens adding some much-needed silliness, director Jon Favreau sees them as ordinary greedy monsters, a missed opportunity. Then we realize it took a spaceship full of writers to adapt Scott Mitchell Rosenberg’s comic book, and the full awkwardness of this torpid adventure snaps into place. Craig makes a passable Steve McQueen, minus the self-deprecating humor (the most charming part of McQ’s screen personality). Harrison Ford, as a hate-filled patriarch, does what he can with a terrible part. Olivia Wilde looks like she just arrived from Planet Vogue. And Sam Rockwell channels John Qualen. Only the Apaches really get it – that figures. The scenario plays like a C+ film school final project. Also with Paul Dano and Clancy Brown (118 min.)
