Cowboy Junkies

When: Mon., April 28, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

Two decades ago, Cowboy Junkies huddled around a solitary microphone within the bowels of Toronto's TrinityChurch. In the midst of cutting a mix of originals and covers that included a narcoleptic reading of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane," the Junkies became darlings of the alternative country and college radio set. Fast forward twenty years, and the Canadian quartet has returned to the scene of its breakthrough success to cut Trinity Revisited, a track-by-track CD/DVD recreation of Trinity Sessions augmented by guest artists Ryan Adams, Vic Chesnutt, and Natalie Merchant. Not as haunted or ethereal as the originals, these renditions still hold up after all this time and resonate despite more robust readings that run contrary to the band's first recordings. Expect to hear the whole enchilada on Monday, April 28atYoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland). 7 & 9 p.m., $30.
