Country Joe McDonald

When: Sat., Nov. 22, 8 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 28, 8 p.m. 2009

The poetic and political music of Country Joe McDonald was inspired in part by the work of Woody Guthrie, so it's natural that McDonald should be interested in the life and work of his hero. "Tribute to Woody Guthrie," the one-man show McDonald's been touring with of late, combines Guthrie's songs, readings from his personal letters and notebooks, and McDonald's own take on Guthrie's importance as a progressive political and folk icon. The show has been getting great reviews all across the country, including one from Nora Guthrie, the keeper of her father's archives. Country Joe brings his "Tribute to Woody Guthrie" to the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley) on Saturday, Feb. 28. 8 p.m., $22.50, $23.50. TheFreight.org
