Animator Henry Selick recaptures some of his Nightmare Before Christmas magic, and then some, in this compellingly produced stop-motion fantasy. When a lonely teenage girl named Coraline (voice of Dakota Fanning) moves to a large, ramshackle house with her oblivious parents, her anxieties literally come out of the woodwork at night, after the lights go down and jumping mice come out to play. Writer-director Selick adapts Neil Gaimans book as a gothic coming-of-age story, never skimping on the terrors but also drawing Coralines world as a circus of limitless possibilities with fascinating characters, from the talking cat (voice of Keith David) to the eccentric neighbors to her doppelganger family on the other side of the wall. A true psychodrama, with everything that implies. Highly recommended (100 min.).
